In the AREA Ruhr Book Talk Series we look at and discuss newly released academic books that deal with East Asia from a wide variety of disciplinary perspectives. Experts from AREA Ruhr meet up with the respective authors to have a conversation about their recent work, learn more about novel research results and discuss the “research journey” that authors had been engaged in. In the fourth AREA Ruhr Book Talk in early June 2025 Dr. Nicolas Schillinger of AREA Ruhr hosted Shuxuan Zhou, PhD, who is located in Seattle, to talk about her monograph From Forest Farm to Sawmill. Stories of Labor, Gender, and the Chinese State. The conversation dealt with the organization and conduct of her fieldwork in China, among other things.
