Exhibition »Die Poesie der Tusche«

The exhibition on show places two representatives of the sumi-e art movement in a dialog and attempts to highlight the artists’ respective foci, their similarities, but also their contrasts. The Japanese side is represented by the artist NISHIKAWA Kan’itsu Masahiro, who found his way to ink painting via the Chinese painter SHI Tao (1642–1707) and began studying painting in 1976. NISHIKAWA’s works are juxtaposed with works by award-winning artist Malgorzata Tohkou OLEJNICZAK, a student of KOBAYASHI Toh’un, who lives in Switzerland and teaches sumi-e in several countries.

Movie series »Auf der Suche nach Verbrechern und neuen Bildern«

In the 1960s and 1970s, Japan was in a phase of economic, political and social upheaval, which also had a serious impact on the country’s filmmaking. As a counter-movement to the films of the previously established master directors, works emerged that were in part radically new in their themes and aesthetics and moved beyond the existing pigeonholes. With seven films made between 1958 and 1968, this series provides an insight into the cinema of the 1960s and presents works by five directors who were among the most important representatives of their time.

Exhibition »Bokudō: Der Weg der Tusche«

They are gems of Japanese arts and crafts: inkstones delicately painted on both sides in various sizes and consistencies, which smell so pleasant when freshly removed from their packaging. They are probably the only handicraft objects whose actual purpose is fulfilled in their disappearance, in their transformation into a work of art. The exhibition, conceived for the Mori Ōgai Memorial Center in 2019, provides an insight into the traditional production of calligraphy ink in Suzuka (Mie Prefecture).
