A new alliance for research and teaching in East Asian studies: AREA Ruhr founded

As two partners within the University Alliance Ruhr, the Institute of East Asian Studies (IN-EAST) at the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) and the Faculty of East Asian Studies at Ruhr-University Bochum (RUB) have founded one of the largest and strongest research alliances in the field of East Asian Studies in Europe.

The new joint institution of IN-EAST and the Faculty of East Asian Studies under the label of AREA Ruhr (Alliance for Research on East Asia Ruhr) will combine a broad range of research fields and the expertise of more than 20 professors. On 11 February 2016, the cooperation agreement was signed by the rectors of both universities, Prof. Dr. Ulrich Radtke (UDE) and Prof. Dr. Axel Schölmerich (RUB). At its inaugural meeting, Prof. Dr. Glen Hook, University of Sheffield, was elected chair of the International Scientific Advisory Board of AREA Ruhr.
