Funding for AREA Ruhr’s Joint MA Program

The Mercator Research Center Ruhr (MERCUR) will provide funding support for the MA Transnational East Asian Studies, a joint program of the Faculty of East Asian Studies, Ruhr-University Bochum, and IN-EAST, University of Duisburg-Essen, under the roof of AREA Ruhr. The program will be backed by MERCUR’s structural grants line of funding.
MERCUR has previously provided financial support for the founding of AREA Ruhr, the joint institute of IN-EAST and the Faculty of East Asian Studies within the University Alliance Ruhr. MERCUR also provides funding for the AREA Ruhr Graduate School. AREA Ruhr would like to thank MERCUR for their continued and substantial support.

MA Transnational East Asian Studies

Deepening their cooperation in research and teaching, IN-EAST and the Faculty of East Asian Studies will offer a new research-oriented MA program in Transnational East Asian Studies, beginning in the winter term 2017/18. The joint program will focus on processes of transnationalization in the East Asian region, broadening the spectrum of country-focused area studies to include comparative, regional, and transnational perspectives. As in our present world transnationalization has become an increasingly important element of economic, social, and cultural relations and processes, the MA program is geared to provide topical qualification to students that seek to think and work across national borders. Combining the strengths of both IN-EAST and the Faculty of East Asian Studies in the humanities and social sciences, the central questions asked in the MA program focus on „transnational identities“ and „transnational institutions“. The broad and diverse expertise and specializations of AREA Ruhr’s professors will be brought together in joint modules and courses.

The program will be open to up to ten students per year with a background in East Asian Studies and is scheduled to start at the beginning of the winter term 2017/18. A call for applications will be published by January/February 2017.
