MERCUR Supports Doctoral Research at AREA Ruhr

AREA Ruhr is proud to announce that the Mercator Research Center Ruhr (MERCUR) has decided to provide funding support for the AREA Ruhr Graduate School “Transnational Institution Building and Transnational Communities in East Asia”. The program will be backed by MERCUR’s structural grants line of funding.
Under the roof of the University Alliance Ruhr, MERCUR has previously provided financial support for the founding of AREA Ruhr, the joint institute of IN-EAST at the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) and the Faculty of East Asian Studies at Ruhr-University Bochum (RUB). MERCUR also provides funding for the planned joint MA in Transnational East Asian Studies. AREA Ruhr would like to thank MERCUR for their continued and substantial support of our project.

AREA Ruhr Graduate School

The AREA Ruhr Graduate School will support eight doctoral students investigating institution building and identity-formation across national borders in the East Asian region.
The research program aims at aligning transnational and transcultural perspectives on regional institution-building and identity formation, building on the competencies of participating researchers and complementarities between social scientific and humanities research expertise at IN-EAST at the University of Duisburg-Essen and the Faculty of East Asian Studies at Ruhr-University Bochum. The research training and supervisory concepts are aimed to support doctoral students to move beyond the country focus of East Asian regional studies and to encourage a cross-disciplinary dialogue.

The program is scheduled to start at the beginning of the winter term 2017/18. A call for applications will be published by January/February 2017.
