On 1st of October 2018, the second cohort of AREA Ruhr doctoral students started their studies in the Transnational Institution Building and Transnational Identities in East Asia doctoral programme from AREA Ruhr. Jihoon CHUN, Marc Paschke, Miquel Salvadó Gracia and An Huy TRAN have received funding from Mercator Research Center Ruhr (MERCUR) for their projects.

The projects cover the diversity of Qing-Chosŏn relations during the late 19th century seen through their treaty-making capacities upon the advent of European International System, the advent and growth of Christian youth associations in East Asia throughout the 19th and 20th century, transnational climate governance against the background of PRC and CELAC and homosexual sexuality and masculinity in Vietnamese transnational migration.

The doctoral programme is jointly organized by the Faculty of East Asian Studies (Ruhr-University Bochum) and the Institute of East Asian Studies (University of Duisburg-Essen).
