The workshop “The Frontier of Continental North East Asian Industrialization. The Long perspective (1895 – Now)” was organised on 25th – 26th of February by Prof. Dr. Flemming Christiansen (University of Duisburg-Essen) and Prof. Dr. Christine Moll-Murata (Ruhr University Bochum).

The workshop participants explored how industrialization emerged in the power competition between the Russian, Chinese and Japanese empires. The papers discussed markets, labor, technologies, and capital formation outside nation-state settings and showed their extension across the wider region during the last 130 years.

The event was a joint effort of colleagues from the AREA (Alliance for Research on East Asia) Ruhr network between the Universities Duisburg-Essen and Ruhr University Bochum, and associated scholars from Amsterdam, Hohhot, London, Suzhou, Warsaw, Poznan, Bonn, Leiden, and Moscow.
